West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 21 December 2007

Pigeons’ battle of Trafalgar Square

I AM glad that the West End Extra covered the Pigeon Action Group report on the death from starvation of Trafalgar Square’s pigeons (Pigeons lose out on square meals, December 14).
I wrote a few years back when feeding was quite legal and yet we were being water-hosed, brutalised and intimidated by English Heritage and other Trafalgar Square staff while the police either stayed well away or intervened in favour of Greater London Authority, Metropolitan Police Authority- connected authorities.
Of course, the pigeons were also being brutalised and hoovered up.
This past fortnight, while reading Andrew Gilligan’s detailed Evening Standard reports about mayor Livingstone’s GLA funding “fun and games”, I was reminded of Ken’s grumbling about funds having to be used to clean the square and his scaremongering that the pigeons were spreading disease.
Humans of all sexualities and ethnicities also spread viruses, but we (and the GLA) don’t begrudge, starve and brutalise them.
Thank you Pigeon Action Group for this latest report.
IAN CAMERON
