Turner’s art of protest

MARK Wallinger has won the Turner Prize for his replica of the one-man anti-war protest in Parliament Square, State Britain.
Actor and director Dennis Hopper presented the £25,000 award at a ceremony at the Tate Liverpool gallery.
“I am indebted to all those people who contributed to the making of State Britain,” said Mr Wallinger.
About 45,000 people have seen the exhibition at the Tate Britain, which was painstakingly pieced together before the real display was confiscated by police last June in an operation that was later revealed to cost more than £100,000.
The banners and placards that have proved an award-winning inspiration to Mr Wallinger are at the centre of a wrangle between police and the anti-war campaigner who is demanding their return to Parliament Square.
Mr Wallinger said: “Brian Haw is a remarkable man who has waged a tireless campaign against the folly and hubris of our government’s foreign policy… the last dissenting voice in Britain”.
