Dry cleaners facing £20,000 noise fine
TWO giant steam presses that “banged like a hammer” on the walls of a residential home have been seized following a raft of complaints.
Police and council noise officers removed the 6ft-by-6ft presses, wrongly fitted, from a dry cleaners in Westminster.
Residents had complained of “excessive vibrations” from the machinery that was wrongly installed.
The loose fittings meant at times it banged the wall every three seconds.
Councillor Audrey Lewis, lead member for community protection that covers noise pollution, said: “We’re more used to investigating noisy builders, late night parties and loud dogs.”
The council confiscated the machines and is now preparing to prosecute the shop, which cannot be named for legal reasons, for breaching noise legislation which could see it fined up to £20,000. |
