‘No graves’ for dead Muslims
MUSLIMS in Westminster feel isolated from the community because they have nowhere to bury their dead.
Despite years of campaigning and offers to fund the laying and maintenance of Muslim burial grounds nothing has been done, according to Queen’s Park councillor Mushtaq Qureshi.
He said: “Families from Westminster are having to travel to Walthamstow, Harrow and Kent to bury their dead. This year six Muslims in my ward have died. One family has had to travel to Luton. We would like a space set aside in one of Westminster’s burial grounds.”
In this country a Muslim grave should be placed on a north-east to south-west alignment so that the grave is facing Mecca. Westminster has claimed that it would take up too much space.
Karen Buck MP said: “I raised this with Kensal Green cemetery a few years ago and they told me there were no Muslims living in Westminster. I think things have moved on a bit by now.”
Cllr Alan Bradley, the cabinet member whose portfolio covers cemeteries, said: “We do not at present have separate provision in our cemeteries for any religions.” |
