Tesco wins new store

SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has won approval for a new store in Lisson Grove, leaving residents and shopkeepers angry and upset.
At a meeting planning chiefs ignored a 1,100-strong petition and gave the go-ahead to the Tesco Express on Hayes Place.
The firm has agreed to install a bigger loading bay and CCTV cameras and donate £100,000 to the Church Street local area renewal partnership as part of its conditions to build the store.
But independent shops fear they will be forced out, while residents say that there are already too many supermarkets in the area – with the Lisson Grove shop the 10th Tesco within a square mile.
Martin Thompson who has led the campaign against the supermarket said: “I am deeply disappointed by this. So many local residents and shopkeepers have serious concerns, and yet the city council has chosen to ignore the strength of feeling by giving in and let Tesco open what will be its 10th Tesco here in Marylebone. Why don’t we just rebrand Westminster as ‘Tescoland’ and be done with it!”
