Have-a-go MP finds trouble on the street

KAREN Buck thrust herself into the front line on Friday when she busted a drugs deal happening outside a police station in broad daylight.
The Labour MP for Kensington North and Regent’s Park left Harrow Road police station at 2pm after crunch talks with senior officers about rising drug crime around the notorious Prince of Wales junction.
Autumn robbery statistics show people living near the crime hotspot are five times more likely to get mugged than in the spring.
As she left the police station, Ms Buck witnessed a fracas in Fernhead Road. She said: “It looked like a drug deal gone wrong. The man was threatening to stab the other guy. There was no one else around so I went up to him and pulled out my camera phone and said ‘I’m taking a picture and I’m going to show the police’. There followed a torrent of abuse and the man dropped the guy and ran off.”
She added: “Crack does all sorts of things to people and it can make people very violent if things are not going their way.”
City Guardians arrived on the scene and Westminster police arrested a man.
Ms Buck said: “It was an extraordinary coincidence – but in some ways not a coincidence at all. I had been in the police station telling them there was a problem. I had been contacted by the residents about this and I told them I was going to sort it out. I didn’t think it would happen so literally.”
A police spokesman said: “Officers attended and a 40-year-old man was arrested. He was subsequently charged with attempted robbery and attended Westminster Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody.”
