Crash tragedy on pedestrian crossing outside elders’ block
A 60-year-old man is fighting for his life after being knocked down by a motorcycle at a danger hotspot in Maida Vale.
The collision came just four hours after Harry Joel MBE contacted the West End Extra on Wednesday afternoon to signal residents’ fears over a pedestrian crossing outside Ada Court.
The 83-year-old chairman of the residents’ association warned the lights gave only a few seconds for pedestrians to cross.
He said: “It would take one of us to get knocked down before something was done.”
Hours later a neighbour, who is believed to have lived alone in the block, was struck by a motorcycle at the crossing. He was taken to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.
Mr Joel said: “The cars and motorcycles whizz by. Often the drivers are on the phone and they are not looking. I have been unhappy about this for two years. It is very sad. I wonder if now will they do something about it?”
Police cordoned off the busy carriageway shortly after 9pm.
A London Ambulance Service spokesman said the victim suffered “severe head injuries”.
Mr Joel, a retired taxi driver, was given an MBE in 1981 following 50 years’ charity work for the war disabled.
A Transport for London spokesman said it would “look into” the matter. |
