West End Extra - by TOM FOOT

Rose battles for better benefits and services

THE country’s oldest newspaper columnist, Rose Hacker, believes pensioners are repeatedly humiliated and dehumanised because of cuts to social services.
The 101-year-old, who writes fortnightly for the West End Extra, was speaking (right) at the annual meeting of the Westminster Advocacy Service for Senior Residents at the London Guildhall.
The service helps pensioners get their benefits and access services.
She said she “dreaded” the way profitability dominates provision of public services, usually ending up as a series of cuts.
After the meeting Rose joined a tour of the remains of the Roman amphitheatre discovered underneath London’s Guildhall during rebuilding in 1995.
