Canteen to replace school pool

A MUCH-LOVED swimming pool will not be replaced when Pimlico School is bulldozed next year.
The omission has angered former school governors who had fought to save the pool until they were replaced by an interim board after the school was put on special measures in December.
Anthea Masey, “sacked” by the council in December, said: “Not one councillor on the special planning committee which met to consider the rebuilding of the school, commented on the fact that there is no provision to replace the school’s excellent, and much loved, swimming pool.”
In the run up to the 2012 Olympics, the loss of an inner London swimming pool bordered on the negligent, she said, adding that before special measures governors had lobbied to save the pool, which is also used by swimming clubs.
Schools chief, Councillor Sarah Richardson, said: “Building Schools for the Future funding rules prevent any cash being spent on school swimming pools or other leisure or community facilities. Councils can spend their own money financing such facilities and Westminster City Council decided to use £4 million from its budget to create a brand new adult education facility and dual-use community and school library.
“Space is limited and it was decided to turn over the space currently occupied by the pool to provide a new school canteen.
“The council is now looking at the possibility of providing a new school and community pool as part of the Chelsea Barrack’s redevelopment.”
