Hurrah for Haw
BRIAN Haw won a partial victory this week when a Southwark Court judge told the police they must immediately bring him an inventory of placards and banners taken from his display earlier this year.
The anti-war campaigner, in his seventh year living in Parliament Square, has repeatedly accused the police of “stealing” banners including two painted by the en vogue graffiti artist Bansky.
But Judge Geoffrey Rivlin QC on Monday told them they must account for what was taken.
The display was dismantled and removed in the middle of the night on in May last year in an operation that cost taxpayers £110,000.
It was packed into a container and taken away by the police and Mr Haw was left with only a few items occupying a three metre long space.
The police had told Mr Haw they would not return his property to his home –– Parliament Square – because of anti-terror legislation banning protest within one kilometre of the Houses of Parliament.
A spokesman for Mr Haw said: “Brian is concerned that his some of his banners may have been damaged in the containers.” |
