‘Cemetery of the year’ win for plot that sold for 5p

ONE of the cemeteries sold for five pence in 1987 by Dame Shirley Porter has been named “Cemetery of the Year”.
East Finchley cemetery in Barnet won the top accolade after beating 55 other graveyards.
The cemetery, maintained by Cemetery Management Ltd, was commended for its “immaculate appearance, maintenance and facilities for the bereaved”.
At the award ceremony in Harrogate last Tuesday Westminster council also accepted the Best Memorial prize for its intricate memorial to the veterans of two World Wars. The memorial was left to ruin following the sale of cemeteries by former council leader Dame Shirley and had been damaged by vandals. The cemetery was one of the three bought back by the council in 1992.
Councillor Alan Bradley, cabinet member for street environment, said: “I am delighted that East Finchley cemetery has been recognised as the best in the country, which is testament to the hard work and dedication of our parks team.
“We are justifiably proud of our substantial achievements in maintaining and improving all three cemeteries in Westminster. This national recognition is particularly pleasing given the past history of Westminster’s cemeteries. ‘Cemetery of the Year’ shows that we have well and truly moved on.”
