£280,000 Olympic promise

A PIONEERING youth club has received a major cash boost from the Mayor of London in return for the promise of young volunteers to help out at the London Olympic Games in 2012.
The £280,000 fund was announced at the London Tigers’ annual football awards ceremony at Porchester Hall, in Bayswater.
Tigers’ founder, Mesba Ahmed, celebrating the success of the club, which has helped a number of Westminster youths achieve positions at semi-professional football clubs, welcomed the fund.
Mr Livingstone said: “On the back of the Olympic Games we want to make sure we get everyone who we can get involved in Olympic sports. The London Tigers bring young people together. What we really need is one of these in every constituency.”
He added: “In Beijing bus drivers and police officers are being taught English and Japanese. We are going to train a whole load of 70,000 volunteers to not just point the way to the toilet but a whole load of other skills.”
Mr Ahmed said he would use the fund to develop the volunteers into sports coaches: “It’s about linking skills to jobs.
“Mr Livingstone is looking for 70,000 volunteers and I’m going to help him as much as I can.”
