Maida Vale goes sub-marine

Little Venice lives up to its name as burst water main floods streets

DOZENS of residents were evacuated and hundreds more left without power after a water pipe burst on Friday.
The three-foot main burst, rupturing the road surface and sending thousands of gallons of water into the streets of Maida Vale – just yards from Little Venice.
Residents in Melbourne Court were evacuated to a nearby pub following an electricity blackout. The high road remained closed last night (Thursday). It was the third major flooding from Thames Water pipes in five years.
Chris Garner, who lives in Clifton Road, said: “This is a repeating saga that I do not believe we should have to put up with. Are Thames Water too worried about their shareholders and not their customers?”
Business owners said thousands of pounds of stock had been destroyed and scores of motorists found their cars, stored in a low level car park, had been ruined. Council loss adjusters had been on the scene all week.
London Assembly member Murad Qureshi, who was alerted to the problem when his shower failed to flow, has written to Thames Water chief executive David Owens demanding an investigation.
A spokesman for Thames Water said: “The road surface will need more work to it than originally anticipated, and we aim to have this completed and the road reopened during this coming weekend. There is a detailed investigation taking place into the structure of this water main and our engineers are working hard to find a solution to strengthen this part of our network.”
