‘Lock up jewels’ order to beat scooter raiders

LUXURY jewellers in the West End have been told to remove window displays at night following a wave of smash-and-grab raids.
The scooter gangs have stolen hundreds of thousands of pounds of luxury goods.
Police said there have been 32 copycat raids on the West End in the past six months.
Commander Steve Allen said: “We have seen an increase in the number of offences over the summer where mopeds and motorcycles have been used as the get-away vehicle.
“We are tackling this crime through a range of intelligence-gathering operations.”
A spokesman at the New West End Company, representing retailers in the West End, said: “This kind of crime has not been taken seriously until now.
“It’s taken the police a year to secure the resources from the home office, which amounts to more emergency resources and more police resources. We’ll see what happens in the next six months.”
