Declaring war on boring art
A YOUNG Maida Vale artist has declared war on the “Ikea art” clogging the walls of the capital’s pubs and bars.
From December, 23-year-old painter Elise Buddle will be sprucing up watering holes across London with her own colourful art work, based on her memories of her favourite pubs.
Ms Buddle, who lives in Delaware Road, believes artists and the public would benefit from more exhibition space in drinking establishments.
She said: “We should broaden the spectrum of how people can get into art. It’s difficult for small artists to get into the art world and many people think modern art is out of their reach, but if it was introduced into local places we could make it more accessible.”
She added: “There is a distinct character to every pub. If that can be enhanced by art then that’s a good thing, but there’s a lot of Ikea art that modernises pubs without bringing any character.”
Ms Buddle’s first show is at The Calthorpe Arms in Clerkenwell on December 6, but with a different pub and a new show every month, the artist will be coming soon to a pub near you. |
