Victory for jobs-threat doctors

DOCTORS in a Bayswater clinic claimed victory this week following a campaign to save their jobs.
GPs at the Garway Road Health Centre, which has 8,000 patients, feared a funding black hole could force some to leave the service.
Following government reforms of NHS funding the Westminster PCT had tabled plans to cut £200,000 from their annual budget – a drop from £180 a patient to £80.
The PCT had put out their contract to competitive tender and doctors and patients feared the move would lead to inferior GPs taking over.
Joanne Cash, a barrister from Bayswater representing the patients, said: “You can’t put a price on local pride and health benefits of people feeling like they have been looked after.”
A spokesman for the Patients’ Action Group said: “A fractious process such as this one has jeopardised the working relationship between our local GPs and Westminster PCT.”
Westminster PCT’s deputy chief executive Paul Jenkins said: “Patients can look forward to excellent local primary healthcare services.”
