Removing island puts pedestrians in danger

• MANY years ago, with the help of the then councillor Lois Peltz, I campaigned successfully to have a traffic island in Shaftesbury Avenue, at the bottom of Frith Street, opposite Gerrard Place.
It is a very busy pedestrian crossing between Leicester Square Tube station and Soho. It was removed for the relaying of water pipes. It has not been replaced. It is difficult and dangerous to get across Shaftesbury Avenue at that point, and I think that Westminster Council should arrange to have the traffic island replaced immediately.

Editor’s note:
Thames Water say the traffic island had been removed to allow the flow of two-way traffic while essential works take place.
The water company said the island would be replaced in five weeks, after works to the other side of Shaftesbury Avenue are complete.
