Galleries reopen with a Thread to Turner prize

ARTS supremo Alan Yentob opened the fully-refurbished Mall Galleries’ announcing a major new art prize to rival the Turner.
The £25,000 Threadneedle Prize, which will open next autumn, will be won by a public vote on a selection of figurative art.
Mr Yentob, chairman of the neighbouring ICA, stressed the importance of ‘education and co-operation’ within the art world. He said: “It is important to get schools involved in art as often as possible.”
Simon Davies, executive chairman of Threadneedle, said: “We hope it will inspire artists and enrich the experience of everyone who visits the show.”
The galleries’ refit followed a new sponsorship deal with Threadneedle Asset Management.
Galleries director Lewis McNaught said: “It provides the Mall Galleries with an opportunity to launch new shows within an exciting, refurbished gallery space.”
Planning permission for the grade I listed building, which used to form the stables for Clarence House, was only received five weeks ago, during which time all of the work has been completed.
