Seven-week makeover
A SECTION of Upper Brook Street in Mayfair is to be closed to traffic for at least seven weeks as part of a £6 million fortification of the US Embassy.
The closure, starting on Monday, will see the part of Upper Brook Street, between Park Street and North Audley Street, closed to traffic.
Plans to install electronically rising bollards around the embassy were delayed in February after US planners realised a network of major utility pipes lay a few feet beneath where the bollards were supposed to go.
The bollards will allow the police to close the area to traffic in the event of intelligence suggesting an imminent car bomb terror attack.
The council has been criticised for not acting on calls from Mayfair community leaders and councillors to pedestrianise Grosvenor Square after the US Embassy was named as Britain’s number one terror target last summer.
Councillor Danny Chalkley said: “We firmly believe the end result will be the best balance between protecting our citizens and ensuring that everyday life can continue in the area.”
The work is expected to be completed by April 2008. |
