Professor Chris Mullard: “A fantastic carnival showcasing the multicultural splendour of the capital”
‘Hard core’ troublemakers spoil carnival splendour

THE Notting Hill carnival ended in carnage on Monday when two teenagers were shot.
One teenager was shot in the shoulder in Blenheim Crescent, near Westbourne Park, after officers heard gunshots at 7pm.
A 14-year-old suffered gunshot wounds in Harrow Road, Kensal Town and a man in his 20s was stabbed in Westbourne Park Road.
Three people were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder over a stabbing in Ladbroke Grove. Another three were arrested in Bayswater Road on suspicion of possession of
firearms.
Police said there was a “hard core” of troublemakers at the carnival, which attracted 600,000 visitors on Monday.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Chris Allison, in charge of policing the carnival, said: “What we witnessed from 5pm that afternoon shows that there was a hardcore, mainly of young men, who came to carnival not to enjoy the event but to fight, commit crime and cause trouble.
“We witnessed groups fighting; objects being thrown at police and large groups of youths pushing roughly through crowds.”
Professor Chris Mullard, who chairs London Notting Hill Carnival Ltd (LNHC) hailed the event as a success.
He said: “This was a fantastic carnival, showcasing the multi-cultural splendour of the capital. The sights and sounds of carnival brought the streets alive, and through the partnership working between LNHC, the Mayor of London, and the British Association of Steel bands’ Panorama was brought to Hyde Park.”
