Call to turn green with stationery

CITY Hall should only use recycled stationery if Westminster is to be taken seriously as a green council.
“It is no use telling people what to do if you are not doing it yourself,” said Harrow Road ward councillor Ruth Bush.
Her warning follows the announcement of plans to roll out special bins for recycling Tetra Pak cartons.
The idea of recycling the popular cartons – used for milk, orange juice and smoothies – had been dismissed by environment chiefs because they contain different layers and specialised treatment is needed to separate the materials.
But the council has caved in and is now planning to station the bins across the borough.
Ms Bush, Labour’s environment spokeswoman, said: “This has only happened because I pointed out in March that the Tetra Pak website showed Westminster as one of only three London boroughs which said it was “not at all” interested in recycling Tetra Paks. Shifting from showing no interest at all to launching a pilot inside six months is pretty good going, and shows what can be done, given the right prodding.
“My next question is: when will the council start to use recycled products as standard for stationery and other office supplies, and require this of their contractors?”
Lead environment councillor Alan Bradley said: “This pilot scheme means that for the first time empty cartons which have for far too long been going to waste will now finally be put to good use.
“If successful we’ll be seeking to work… to expand the number of collection bins so even more residents have the opportunity to recycle their old cartons.”
