Roll-out of parking by phone
CASHLESS parking, where drivers pay to park using their mobile phones, has been rolled out to Mayfair.
The Pay-by-Phone scheme was launched on Tuesday following the pilot of the scheme in Soho.
Parking meters in Mayfair have been removed.
The move follows a poll showing 77 per cent were either satisfied or very satisfied with Pay-by-Phone parking.
Councillor Danny Chalkley, Westminster City Council cabinet member for economic development and transport, said: “The evidence has shown that there is overwhelming support for the wider use of this new technology.
“We launched Pay-by-Phone parking in October last year to give motorists a new, coin-free way of paying for their parking.
“Being able to top-up your meter on the move, without returning to your vehicle, provides greater flexibility for motorists and helps them avoid unnecessary fines.”
Under the scheme, drivers set up an account only once, inputting their registration details and card details.
Then when they need to park, they simply call and enter their parking bay number and the number of minutes they wish to park for.
This information is then transmitted to parking attendants’ hand-held computers which give them an alert when a bay is no longer paid for.
Westminster intends to axe all its parking meters by December 2008. |
