Death plunge inquest delayed again
THE inquest into the mystery death of an Egyptian billionaire who fell from the roof of his St James’s home in June has been delayed for the second time.
Westminster Coroner Dr Paul Knapman this week delayed the inquest into the death of Dr Ashraf Marwan to give detectives more time to trace crucial missing evidence.
The Metropolitan Police admitted on Wednesday that Dr Marwan’s shoes have disappeared and are feared to have been destroyed.
The shoes would have helped prove whether he had fallen off his balcony and had stepped on something before doing so, or was thrown off it by someone else.
Scotland Yard had originally treated Dr Marwan’s death as non-suspicious.
But following revelations made by his sons this week that their father’s memoirs may have been stolen from his home the day he died, they are investigating a possible murder.
Dr Marwan, 62, has been accused of being an Egyptian double agent, feeding Israel false information during the Yom Kippur war.
The 200-page document may hold clues as to his involvement.
Scotland Yard said detectives would interview witnesses, including the concierge to his apartment building, neighbours and a number of family members.
In June, friends of Dr Marwan told the West End Extra that he had undergone three serious heart operations and walked with a stick.
Dr Knapman will now hold a special meeting on September 4 to set a new inquest date. |
