Carnival knife alert

MOBILE metal detectors are being used at the Notting Hill Carnival this year in an attempt to crack down on knife crime.
The metal detection arches will be stationed at random points on both Sunday and Monday. Sniffer dogs will hunt out weapons with 650 officers on duty. Asst Chief Constable Paul Crowther said: “While we’re certainly not there to spoil the fun, we want people to have a safe time as well as a good time.”

• Extra charges will be in place as parking chiefs hope to put the brakes on drivers clogging up the carnival. The council says special charges are necessary to keep traffic moving. Residents’ bays in Harrow Road, Kilburn Lane, Shirland Road and Warwick Avenue, will be suspended. Bays in Artesian Road, Moorhouse Road, Needham Road, Courtnell Road, Northumberland Place, St Stephen’s Gardens, and Sutherland Place will also be suspended until the end of the holiday weekend. Normal parking controls will resume on Tuesday.
