Young peace activist to film Iraqis in Jordan
A TWELVE-year-old Muslim peace activist jetted off to Jordan on Thursday to film families that have fled from Iraq.
Sonia Azad, who lives in central London, said she wanted to give a voice to Iraqi children who have suffered as a result of the war.
She has raised £1,000 from British activists for an aid fund for Iraqi refugee families.
Sonia, who set up the group Children Against War when she was seven, will meet Voices for Creative Nonviolence co-ordinator Kathy Kelly, a US peace activist once nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, who is working with Iraqi refugees in Jordan.
Sonia, who edits the youth page for the pacifist weekly, Peace News, has been speaking up for children harmed by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2002, addressed the Westminster Interfaith Pilgrimage in June.
She said: “At the moment I am campaigning for the Iraqi children living in Jordan, and neighbouring Countries as refugees. I would like to go to Jordan, to make a documentary – giving voice to Iraqi children. I feel very strongly that Iraqi children should be allowed to speak out. I feel Iraqi children have a right to tell children of Great Britain and United States what’s happening to them.” |
