Wrangle on power politics
WESTMINSTER Liberal Democrats have accused the council of double standards.
They also claim City Hall is recycling less waste than the average resident.
A Freedom of Information request revealed how staff working in the council’s headquarters generated 504 tonnes of waste between April 2006 and March 2007 – but only 17 per cent was recycled.
They say the council, despite claims it is doing all it can to go “green”, is failing to set a proper example after City Hall’s electricity bill rocketed.
The average amount of waste recycled by Westminster residents is 19 per cent.
Between the 2002 and 2006 elections electricity usage has risen by 31 per cent, according to figures released under the act.
Lib Dem Stuart Bonar said: “First the council tells local people to recycle more, while City Hall lags behind them. Now, the council website tells us to use less energy, while its own main building’s electricity usage is up almost a third.
“It’s do as we say, not as we do from this Tory administration. What a joke!” |
