Leadership skills against extremism
YOUNG Muslims are being given free lessons in leadership skills in a scheme aiming to reduce crime and prevent extremism.
The move comes after a survey of teenage Muslims in Westminster found a majority had “no legitimate outlet for protest” and were “disillusioned” with the opinions of their elders.
The council believe the best way to tackle religious extremism is to raise the profile of young British Muslims in their communities.
An initial £70,000 has been pledged to train a dozen 17 to 19-year-olds and to hire venues for four political debates over the next six months.
One of the debates – to be held in Church Street, Harrow Road and the London Central Mosque – will focus on counter terrorism and be attended by the police.
The six-month scheme begins in September and the council is interviewing for training posts. |
