Inspirational women who fought for the vulnerable
THE creation of Macintosh House was down to two inspirational women and former Marylebone residents.
Lady Anne Macintosh founded the home delivery service Meals on Wheels.
She was, reads the plaque inside the old people’s home in Beaumont, “a tireless campaigner for older people in the borough”.
She lived in Marylebone her whole life and bequeathed her estate to her friend Lucy Nettlefold – on the condition it be used for “the older people of Marylebone”.
Ms Nettlefold – former Tory councillor and alderman of the old Marylebone Borough Council in the 1950s, was known as Nancy to her friends.
She fought and won a successful battle in 1914 against the Law Society blocking women from sitting examinations.
Nettlefold, who was awarded an OBE in 1960, was appointed to the Royal Commission on Equal Pay. She served on a variety of council committees becoming an alderman in 1956.
She used the money to buy the lease for the block from Howard de Walden in 1962 – three years after her friend died in 1959. |
