Army and Navy Club on risk list
ENGLISH Heritage has raised the alarm over the state of Westminster’s historic buildings.
There are 34 buildings at serious risk of irreparable damage, according to its annual report.
The building most at risk in Westminster is 9-11 Duke Street – a 18th century townhouse in Marylebone.
The Grade II listed railings around Regent’s Park in Park Crescent are also in “serious” jeopardy as is the Grade-II listed Crockers pub in Aberdeen Place, Maida Vale.
The Grade-I listed buildings flagged in the report include:
• The palladian palace Egremont House, now known as 94 Piccadilly.
• Span Four at Paddington Station, based on Brunel’s designs.
• St Mark’s Church in North Audley Street, Mayfair.
• St Mary Magdalene in Rowington Close, St James’s.
Egremont House is owned by the The Army and Navy Club as a traditional establishment for former and serving officers of the British and Commonwealth Armed Services.
The club was granted listed building consent last week to dismantle and reconstruct the building’s front entrance. |
