Alarm over ‘bat-related’ crime
BUILDERS have been put on a Gotham City-style red alert after a surge in “bat crime”.
The bats are under threat from roofers and environmental chiefs are calling for vigilance.
Roosting bats – often found in the Palace of Westminster, the House of Lords library and Buckingham Palace, according to the council – have been protected by law following worrying national statistics showing a sharp surge in “bat-related crime”.
More than 200 incidents were reported to the Bat Conservation Trust in three years from July 2004 to April 2007.
Dr Carol Williams, bats and built environment officer at the trust, said: “All bats and their roosts are protected by law, as a result of a severe decline in numbers. Yet, some builders and maintenance workers are still not aware that bats are protected species. ”
Five species have been recorded in Westminster and the council believes they must survive if they are to tackle climate change and offset carbon footprint.
Councillor Alan Bradley said: “A thriving bat population benefits residents and those who visit Westminster, and gives many people, who may never otherwise see a bat, an opportunity to experience and appreciate these fascinating animals. They also play an important part in keeping the insect population in check.” |
