Survivor fetes an explorer

BROADCASTER and survival expert Ray Mears unveiled a plaque in Pimlico to honour one of the Westminster’s forgotten sons.
Mr Mears paid tribute to David Thompson – 150 years after his death.
Mr Thompson was also instrumental in mapping the official boundaries between America and Canada in the 19th century. The green plaque (above) was unveiled outside his old school Greycoat Hospital , in Greycoat Place.
Mr Mears said: “My knowledge and experience of basic survival methods means I understand more than anyone the challenges David Thompson faced and I have always found his desire, curiosity and determination to see what’s over the next horizon deeply inspiring.”
He added: “Thompson is one of London’s great unsung heroes and I am thrilled the council has recognised the importance of one of the forgotten 18th century explorers.”
Thompson moved to Canada aged 14. He travelled across much of western Canada, including a famous journey through the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean.
