Church roof lead target for thieves
A BUNGLED attempt to steal valuable lead from the roof of a historic church is part of a wave of similar attacks in the area, the verger of St Giles-in-the-Field has warned.
On Monday thieves tried to snatch slabs of historic lead mounted on the Grade-I listed church roof during a post-war renovation.
Police were alerted after a neighbour heard “one hell of a noise” as a window was smashed before midnight.
“It looks like a bomb has been dropped,” said deputy verger Michael Hennessey of the damage.
“The Archdeacon Bill Jacobs came to look and he said the attack mirrored many others in the past few months.
“Lots of lead is disappearing from church roofs.
“They came in through the window and caused a lot of damage trying to get the lead.
“But luckily one of our neighbours heard them break in.”
He added: “I just hope all is well for St Giles Day on September 1.” |
