Gardener’s mystery canal death
The body of a landscape gardener was discovered in the Grand Union Canal on Friday.
Detectives are investigating the death of Joshua Newton, 42, who lived in Marylands Road, Maida Vale.
A post-mortem examination on Sunday failed to reveal a cause of death and further tests are taking place.
The body was found yards from the beer garden of the Grand Union pub, at the Woodfield Road junction, police said.
They believe Mr Newton was seen walking on the canal’s bridge with two men at about midnight.
A police spokesman said: “We would particularly like to hear from anyone who might have been drinking in the garden of a pub on Thursday night, just yards from where the body was found.”
Shocked colleagues who had been working with Mr Newton to transform a four-acre plot at nearby Meanwhile Gardens were devastated by the news.
Mr Newton was a volunteer for the charity Meanwhile Gardens and co-worker Phil Raulo said: “We are all devastated by Joshua’s death. Joshua had been volunteering at the garden for the last year and was a valued member of the team. It is a real loss for the project.”
Officers made appeals in Woodfield Road near the canal and the Grand Union pub.
Three youths were arrested on Saturday and released on bail until July pending further inquiries.
