Recycle attitude’s rubbish

• I LIKE to deposit my used tins, bottles and newspapers in the council bins for recycling.
But having seen (and heard) the deposit on the footway of large bags of bottles from pubs in this area, I wrote to the Leader of the Council.
I was astonished to learn that while it operates a vehicle seven days a week to collect glass bottles from Westminster pubs, not only is the waste disposal of commercial items an “open market” but there is no compulsion requiring commercial businesses to recycle their waste and “there are no national targets for commercial waste recycling as there are for household waste”.
How extraordinary when humble Joe Public is encouraged, exhorted, chivvied and virtually threatened when it comes to recycling lowly domestic waste.
When one considers the possible reasons for such a strange dichotomy in government attitude, one runs the risk of becoming a cynic!
