Greener street lamps light way ahead
THE battle to beat climate change has been ratcheted up a notch, with City Hall chiefs switching to super-intelligent street lamps to light their roads.
High-tech energy saving street lamps will soon be illuminating Embankment Gardens – and eventually the entire borough – after a successful trial on Harrow Road.
Furyo Lanterns emit 40 per cent less carbon than normal street lamps and are installed with “solar pec” micro-chips which detect light levels and switch the lamps on automatically when it starts to get dark.
The lamps change the way light is reflected, increasing their strength and allowing a lower wattage of bulb to be used.
Since May 8 the £1 million refit has saved 0.28 tonnes of carbon emissions on Harrow Road, equivalent to an extra 14 trees, and saved 1.8KWH of electricity per day, enough to power a house for two days, council bosses claim.
Councillor Alan Bradley, cabinet minister for the environment, said: “These changes are vital and will help preserve our heritage and the city for everyone to enjoy for generations to come.”
The council plans to expand the scheme to cover every street in the district at a cost of £15 million. |
