Dung tipped outside restaurant
VEGETARIAN activists dumped a tonne of horse manure outside Claridge’s in Mayfair on Tuesday.
Protesters from the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) were demonstrating against chef Gordon Ramsay promoting horsemeat on his hit television show The F-Word.
In the show journalist Janet Street Porter said horses were a healthier option to lamb, chicken and pig.
The animal rights group said horses bred for eating travelled long-distances without food and water in crowded trucks.
They said the foul-mouthed chef had “landed himself in deep dung”.
Campaign leader Anita Singh said: “Some horses arrive at the abattoir injured or dead. Those who survive are often still conscious when their throats are slit by abattoir workers.”
A statement issued on behalf of The F-Word said: “Although perfectly legal to eat horse meat in Britain, the usual method of obtaining good quality product is to order from abroad.
“The show does nothing to suggest anything other than the paramount importance of the ethical welfare of any animals bred for consumption.”
Westminster Council removed the manure a few hours later.
