The designer loo is lowered into St Anne’s Garden |
A few pennies spent on ‘toilet-pod’
PUPILS at Soho Parish School breathed a sigh of relief after a designer loo was winched into St Anne’s Garden on Monday.
The £52,000 egg-shaped ‘toilet-pod’ will be free for community groups, schools and disabled people using the green space in Wardour Street.
Katherine William-Powlett, of the community group Soho Green, said: “There are over 200 children at school or pre-school within a minute’s walk of this garden. It is the only open green space in Soho for them. As soon as the loo is connected up they will be able to play here for much longer.”
Elaine Duigenan will decorate the inside with photographs.
Cllr Alan Bradley, of Westminster City Council, praised the loo, which is made from chestnut, oak and other softwoods.
He said: “Not only is the toilet functional, but it’s also a piece of art.”
The council contributed £20,000 to the cost of the lavatory while the rest of the project, which was designed by architect Steve Johnson, was funded by Soho Green. |
