Water co admits chlorine leak

TWO hundred residents have lodged complaints with Thames Water about a strong smell of chlorine in their tap water.
The water supplier confirmed the problem and claim it was caused by a valve leak in the pipe network in Maida Vale. It said there was no “significant risk to public health” but have advised customers not to use the water for drinking, cooking or washing. The company apologised for any inconvenience.
A spokesman said: “We recognise that the chlorine levels were beyond acceptable limits for our customers.
Thames Water detected the high levels of chlorine following routine maintenance and cleaning of a water main in Sutherland Avenue on Wednesday night.
“The cause was established as two unsealed valves within the pipe system.
“Once identified, the valves were sealed and the pipes were flushed to remove any residual traces.”
