Play to honour 300th anniversary of Fielding

A PLAY commemorating the 300th anniversary of the birth of Henry Fielding will be staged at Middle Temple Hall in Fleet Street this weekend.
The Adventures of Henry Fielding: The Temple Beau includes extracts from Fielding’s plays and journals, including the Temple Beau and Tom Thumb.
Fielding was an established dramatist, journalist and novelist during the mid 18th century.
His work includes the classic novels Tom Jones and Shamela. Fielding was appointed a Magistrate at Bow Street Court and started a campaign of crime prevention.
He then founded The Bow Street Runners, a group of constables who were the forerunners to the modern day police force.
Gerry Barrett director of Edward Holdings, which bought Bow Street court in July last year for £20 million, commented: “As the owners of the building in Bow Street, home of the former magistrates’ court and police station, we thought it would be perfectly appropriate to support this commemoration of the life and works of Henry Fielding, who served there as a magistrate.”
The performance will include references to the many famous people who passed through Bow Street Magistrate Court, including playwright Oscar Wilde.
Tickets can be booked by telephone on 020 7407 4982 or online at www.templemusic.org/events.
