West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 20 April 2007

Anti-social families will not be forced out

YOUR story last week referring to Westminster City Council’s Family Intervention Project was inaccurate (Anti-social families in the ‘sin-bin’, April 13).
First, it is completely incorrect for you to say the council is setting up “sin bins” for “troubled” families, where they will be monitored 24 hours a day. In the worst cases, Westminster is proposing to arrange for families to be voluntarily moved into different homes in the city so they are no longer in areas where their behaviour is an issue.
Second, no family has been forced from their home and none will be. Given that the project has just begun, only one family has signed up to this initiative so far and there are no plans to move them from their home.
Third, you claim the Council is spending £395,000 on the programme when the true figure is £190,000.
The programme is aimed at families with whom all other attempts at curbing their anti-social behaviour have failed and they are on the edge of being issued with anti-social behaviour orders or eviction notices.
It will focus on the most problematic families in Westminster who persistently perpetrate anti-social behaviour.
It is a twin-track approach balancing the needs of the family with the needs of the wider community.
CLLR SARAH RICHARDSON
Cabinet Member for Children’s Services
Westminster City Council
