Why our pools go under
• FORMER residents of Westminster may well remember the farce that was the Marshall Street pool refurbishment.
I was a daily swimmer there whilst living in Marylebone in the mid-90s. It was closed for refurbishment in 1997 with the promise of a new and improved public facility re-opening within two years.
It gradually became apparent that the council never had any intention of reopening the facility and was, in fact, intent on commercial gain.
This is but one example of a long but largely hidden record of council-run public pools being closed for a promised renovation, left deliberately to fall into disrepair over a period of years until residents give up their lobbying.
At which point the relevant plot is sold to developers with close political ties who have been waiting in the wings. I hope we are not witnessing the latest installment.
