West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 6 April 2007

Let dog owners alone

• IMAGINE the headline “Camden Council to ban picnics in the park,” followed by the story: “A council spokesman confirmed that, due to litter being left by a few irresponsible people, picnics would be banned in all parks and open spaces.”
Sounds improbable? Sounds ridiculous? It certainly is, but that is how they intend to treat dog owners under the proposed control orders.
The dog owners I know are responsible and in addition to always ‘poop scooping’ are only too pleased to share the enjoyment of their pets with others.
My local park, Russell Square, has full-time employees whose job it is to pick up litter dropped by people using the park.
There are existing laws to control litter louts as there are for irresponsible dog owners and more effort should be made to enforce these before seeking to penalise the majority of good citizens for the acts of those who are not.
