West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 30 March 2007

Anger over casino

• YOUR excellent report (Casino plan clears first hurdle, March 16) of the outrage felt by local residents at the plan (which was passed by one vote) to site a casino in the middle of a residential area, stated quite correctly that the applicant was in the process of applying for a 24-hour gaming licence.

The process to our surprise is well advanced with a hearing scheduled for April.
We had mistakenly assumed that this happensafter the planning commitee not simultaneously.
Anyone who is as shocked as I am about and not wanting a casino in the middle of Bloomsbury should therefore write without delay to: The Clerk to the Magistrates, Highbury Magistrates Court, Holloway road, N7.
ANNA HELLMANN
Bury Place, WC1

CAMDEN Council has granted planning permission for a Casino in the Thistle Hotel on Bloomsbury Way despite vocal opposition from residents living in Bury Place regarding their loss of amenity.

This has caused enormous upset in the locality. I am writing on behalf of Holborn and Covent Garden Branch Labour Party in support of the residents and wish to express our deep concerns over the establishment of a casino in a residential area.
GILES WRIGHT
Chair, Holborn and Covent Garden Branch Labour Party
