Reforms threaten legal aid, warns lawyer

HUNDREDS demonstrated against controversial reforms to the legal aid system in Parliament Square on Monday.
The changes, to be brought in under the controversial Carter Review, could drive many independent solicitors out of business.
The proposals will see lawyers bid competitively for all legal aid work with firms paid on a case-by-case basis rather than an hourly rate.
The changes will stop providers taking on time-consuming and complex housing, immigration and employment cases, campaigners argue.
Karen Buck, the Labour MP for Regent’s Park and Kensington North won the Dodd’s & Scottish Widows MP of the Year for her stand on the legal aid debate.
She said: “The most vigorous representations from my local area come from the specialist providers, who fear that they will be squeezed out by cost and by the approach of the community legal advice networks and the community legal advice centres.”
