Look after elderly
• THE beginning of this year has finally seen the last hidden scandal of our society beginning to reach serious public attention.
In January there was major publicity on TV news about the extent of theft and fraud committed by family members against older people, while last month we witnessed a horrific programme by Panorama on neglect and lack of care in some care homes.
Fortunately, not all care providers are cruel, heartless people who seek to make a fast buck from the elders in their care, and not all families are out to exploit and take advantage of their mums and dads. Most older people do quite well, although many would benefit from a better pension.
But the sad truth is that too many older people are being hurt and exploited by those they should be able to trust.
In the last couple of years we have finally got some of the big boys of the charity sector interested in challenging elder abuse – age concern, help the aged and comic relief to name but a few.
But we can only reach those most in need of protection if the abuse of older people becomes as unacceptable as domestic violence or child cruelty. And we can only do that if all of us take an interest.
So please join our campaign for adult protection legislation (www.elderabuse.org.uk), or become members of our charity and support our work. Let’s achieve justice for our older people. Do it because they are our mums and dads and they deserve so much more. Don’t they?
