ENO plans to axe jobs
THE English National Opera (ENO) has announced plans to axe dozens of jobs.
ENO bosses say following the Treasury’s Comprehensive Spending Review it is “very clear” no salvage package would be offered and 48 staff including singers and musicians would have to go. The opera house in St Martin’s Lane, Covent Garden, is also in talks with actors union Equity, stage workers’ union Bectu and the Musicians’ Union.
An ENO spokeswoman said: “We can’t afford to open on Sundays because we have to pay overtime. Even if we want to do small-scale work we have to pay everyone, even if they are not performing.”
But Musicians’ Union general secretary Horace Trubridge said: “Every time there is an overhaul at ENO we are told that sacrifices and concessions are necessary to ensure the long term stability of the company. It seems that yet again the management has failed to do its sums properly.”
Gerry Morrissey, Bectu’s secretary, said the job cuts were on the government’s conscience.
He said: This announcement comes on the back of the government reducing grants to the arts. We cannot help but believe part if this is down to expenditure on the Olympic Games.” |
