Pick of the Indies

WHO makes films today and what markets are they aimed at?
Such a question may have studio executives rabbiting late into the night. And according to a gang of friends in Belsize Park who have also considered this question, there is little out there for women aged 50 upwards – so they have decided to do something about it and make their own film about the lives of women aged over 50.
One of the figures behind the film is Yvonne Deutschman, a producer and editor who worked at the BBC for many years: she joined her friends Thereza Snyman and Ann Cameron to write, direct and produce Three to Tango, a new indie film set in Belsize Park.
“There are not many films made for women of a certain age,” says Yvonne. “And we were talking about this and realised there was a huge market out there not being catered for, with stories that genuinely reflect our lives.
“We wanted to re- address the imbalance. We’re making a film for women, and by women. Whilst leading parts are frequently played by male actors over 45, women in this age group start to disappear from our screens. This is because the majority of people behind the scenes are men.”
The film stars singer Toyah Wilcox, and while extras from the area are involved, the producers also got actresses living in Belsize Park on board. It means a return to the screen for Maggie Nolan, who makes a cameo appearance in Three To Tango. She was in the 1964 Bond film Goldfinger and a host of Carry On flicks. But aged 28 she retired from the screen, aware that she was being typecast as a “bubbly blonde” .
The film has a gala charity premiere at the Belsize Park Everyman on October 20, and a distributor is being sought to get the flick on general release.
