In The Realm of the Senses. Directed by Nagisa Oshima. Certificate: 18

This late 70s Japanese-French flick gained notoriety for its frank study of sexual mores.
It shocked viewers in Japan so much it was banned for a time but won plaudits elsewhere. Presented at Cannes in 1978, it scooped the festival’s top award.
Re-released by the British Film Institute, it is based on a true story and goes like this: in the mid-1930s, innkeeper Kichizo fell in love with a young employee and left his wife for his lover.
The pair embarked on a steamy affair that erred on the side of torrid. They were rather partial to indulging in one another’s sexual fantasies, which climaxed in the violent death of Kichizo. Sada’s subsequent trial gripped the nation.
Director Nagisa Oshima leaves little to the imagination – it is all rather fruity at times yet still manages to be a sensitive study of passion, sensuality, sexuality and love.
