The Review - AT THE MOVIES with DAN CARRIER
Published: 2 July 2009

Pick of the Indies

A FILM chronicling the life of Jack Firestein celebrates its premiere this week. Jack, who once worked distributing papers for the New Journal, was a lifelong left-winger with a fascinating life story.
Jack died in 2004 aged 87, and the film, made with the help of Chris Reeves from the London Socialist Film Co-op, tells his story and includes tributes and anecdotes from friends and colleagues. Toughened up on the streets of the East End in the 1930s, he scratched a living from the rag trade but soon turned to book selling – a business that he would continue for the rest of his life.
He was severely injured in action during the Second World War and won the military medal for bravery, before working as a driver for the union leader Clive Jenkins.
More than Just a Bookseller premieres on Wednesday at 7pm at the Theatro Technis, Crowndale Road. 020 7485 8752.

AND don’t forget: the Kilburn Film Festival is upon us this coming weekend, with a host of amazing films by legendary Irish director Bob Quinn. The director joins the audience for a question and answer session on Saturday night. 020 7328 1000.
