Jason Segel and Andy Samberg in I Love You, Man
A laugh-along best man story that rings true

I LOVE YOU, MAN
Directed by John Hamburg
Certificate 15

AH, the role of the best man: something that is meant to fill you with pride, but in fact tops up even the most Alpha of males with dread.
But spare a thought for the groom: not only does he have to face a barrage of hostile anecdotes in front of the in-laws, but before even reaching this point, he must select from his fine bevy of upstanding chums someone to deliver the homilies.
This comedy from Meet The Parents writer and director John Hamburg considers the conundrum the newly engaged face.
We meet Peter, an estate agent who is heavily into his girl Zooey (shouldn’t such a name automatically make him wary of the prospective in-laws?) but the only stumbling block he has on the road to betrothal is he gradually realises none of his mates is really suitable best-man material.
He embarks on a mission to find the best best man out there, going on a series of “man dates” in a fruitless search for a buddy to stand by him while his bride walks up the aisle.
His man dates are all failures and he is at his wits’ end – until he meets Sydney Fife, an apparently charming and fun guy with whom our hero instantly bonds. But, as their relationship develops, it begins to affect his other half. Poor Peter has some tough choices to make as the big day approaches.
Hamburg uses his observant wit to create farces out of contemporary hang-ups regarding such institutions as marriage.
While this is no Meet The Parents/Meet The Fockers, and relies occasionally on lazy laughs, I Love You, Man feels good in the right places and is harmless fare that has enough romance and gentle giggles to make it worthwhile.
